Thusanang Trust, based in Magoebaskloof in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, aims to empower rural people and disadvantaged communities through capacity-building training. The vision involves the sharing of knowledge and skills so that the learners of today become the entrepreneurs and leaders of tomorrow. We provide the rod and not the fish!
Thusanang Trust facilitates SMME (Small Micro Medium Enterprise) projects and skills development such as sewing technology, vegetable gardening and an indigenous tree nursery. Thusanang Trust is also facilitating the establishment of early childhood development centres in rural and deep rural areas of the Limpopo Province of South Africa.
The resident sewing courses held at the Thusanang Centre, start with a basic six-week garment making course. As well as learning the various sewing processes, the students learn basic maintenance of their machines, health & safety in the workplace, record keeping and invoicing. The course is followed-up with workshops and a training visit to the students' home or place where she is running her business. Thusanang gives the students a good start to setting up their businesses by subsidizing the purchases of a sewing machine by 50% when funding allows. Two week, more advanced, courses are held for students who have completed the basic course and want to learn to make specific items that they feel there is a good market for in their area.
Ex-students are invited to help Thusanang execute orders. This can either be done at the Thusanang Centre or they may work on the order at their homes. Where necessary, a workshop is held prior to the order being processed.
