Sparring giraffe…

By Morné Hamlyn on March 10, 2008

Brilliant afternoon entertainment…

We were entertained yesterday afternoon by these two young male giraffe “necking”.

This is typical sparring battles used by big males to sort dominance out to mate with females in estrus. The blows caused by their heavy skulls when swung in an arch can be quite severe and it is not uncommon for the most dominant male to knock it’s opponent to the ground.
The 'Battle.
The “battle” between these two however was only in preperation for the future…
